Château Petrus

History

The reputation of Pétrus was truly built in the 20th century under the impetus of Madame Édmée Loubat, who made it one of the most sought-after wines in Bordeaux, then through the alliance established from 1945 with the merchant Jean-Pierre Moueix, in charge of its distribution. The Moueix family gradually became owners and continues to run the estate today.

Pétrus, in Pomerol, is considered the most emblematic wine of the appellation — although Pomerol has never been the subject of an official classification, unlike the Médoc. Run by the Moueix family (Establishments Jean-Pierre Moueix), the estate cultivates a modest vineyard of about 11.5 hectares, almost exclusively planted with merlot, without second wine.

The Vineyard

The vineyard rests on a small plateau of blue clay mixed with gravel, a rare soil in Pomerol that retains water and naturally regulates the strength of the vine. The vineyard, almost exclusively composed of merlot (about 95%), complemented by a small proportion of Cabernet Franc, gives wines with a characteristic power and richness.
